We celebrated Setsubun this past week here at Beanstalk.
It marks the first day of Spring in Japan (立春).
We made Oni themed crafts in each class.
The days leading up to Setsubun had classmates talking about the visiting Oni (Demon) and which teachers they thought would be playing the part.
The custom of Mamemaki involves throwing roasted soybeans (福豆) at the oni while chanting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Demons out! Luck in!”).
The Missy Mouse Class were a little scared but did an excellent job of driving the Oni back outside.
Despite the teac….Oni’s best efforts the older students weren’t scared at all.
After all that business of driving away Oni, it was time for lunch.
We had ehō-maki (恵方巻) an uncut type of Makizushi (rolled sushi).
